Prof. (Dr.) S.K. Sarin, Sr. Professor, Vice Chancellor, ILBS, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, is a clinician – a Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist, a pioneer in clinical innovations, a gifted teacher, and a hybrid with great insights into basic and clinical research, a medical entrepreneur, and an ambassador of enthusiastic learning. His contributions in reforms in medical education and health sciences are also noteworthy. At present he is working at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), the first of its kind in Asia. His main mission is to develop ILBS as the best possible institution of its kind in the world.

In his academic career spanning for nearly 30 years, he has immensely contributed internationally to the field of Liver diseases. He has more than 350 International publications to his credit, including The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology. His deep interest in physiology has recently resulted in the development of a unique model of endotoxemia induced portal hypertension and liver disease. He has helped describe two new disease entities, portal biliopathy, and ‘Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure”. He has edited eleven books on liver diseases, many of which are standard reference books and contributed more than 69 chapters in various medical text books. Dr. Sarin is the founding Chief Editor of a prestigious Journal, Hepatology International (Springer International).  He has served editorial assignments in most prestigious journals in the specialized fields. His recent contributions in the field of liver regeneration using growth factors has a great potential for patients with advanced liver disease and liver failure so as to provide options of transplant free survival. He has helped develop 17 major treatment guidelines, including spearheading five major Asian Pacific Treatment Guidelines in Liver diseases; which are widely quoted and practiced.

Prof. Sarin is also an academic clinician with research interests. He continuously works towards various public health initiatives in collaboration with government and private organisations at national levels. Prof. Sarin, with his intense dedication, vision and work, is a role model for the country. He has been bestowed with Padma Bhushan by the Govt of India and several others from national and international level.

His humility and touch with the common man, integrity, far reaching contributions to the health and wellbeing of his patients, have indeed left an indelible impact on the well-being of millions of people in the country. It is his vision that project PRAKASH has seen the day of the light and have impacted thousands of lives through its activities.

Dr. Ekta Gupta did her MD in Microbiology from KGMC, Lucknow and her Senior Residency from AIIMS, New Delhi as well as Senior Research Associateship in Clinical Virology. She was granted gold medal for her MD and did post MD research work in dengue viruses for which “the best scientist award for outstanding contribution in clinical research by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)” was given.

She is working in ILBS since 2009 and is heading department of clinical virology at ILBS. Her major research interests are in hepatitis viruses (HBV, HCV, and HEV), transplant viruses and dengue virus. She has more than 40 scientific publications indexed in national & international journals and author of 7 chapters in books. She is the nodal officer for integrated counseling and testing center for HIV at the institute through Delhi State Aids Control Society. She is actively involved in organizing various social level screening and vaccination camps for HBV, HCV & HIV in general public. Not only she is an active member of various institutional committees but also an executive member of Indian Association of Medical Microbiologist Association and various other committees outside the institute.

She is in charge of WHO collaborating center for viral hepatitis and liver diseases at ILBS. She has been instrumental in setting up of laboratory diagnostic support program for laboratory technicians at national level on viral hepatitis under project PRAKASH.

Dr Ankur Jindal has completed his MBBS in 2008 with 1 gold medal and 3 certificates of honors and finished his MD Internal Medicine from PGIMER, Chandigarh in 2011. Completed DM in Hepatology from ILBS in 2014. He has the capability and skills of performing both upper and lower GI diagnostic and ERCPs. He also had experience in hepatic hemodynamics including Hepatic Venous Pressure Gradient measurement and transjugular liver biopsies.

He is presently working as Associate Professor of Hepatology and Liver transplantation at ILBS. His areas of interest are Viral Hepatitis, Portal hypertension, and Hepatorenal syndrome. He has publications in leading journals including New England Journal of Medicine, GUT, Endoscopy, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Liver International in 2016.

In addition to the above, Dr. Ankur Jindal is also PI for both ECHO & PRAKASH project and has been a great support and mentor to the team. He has been providing much needed scientific guidance on regular basis for successful implementation of the program at national level. He has been one of the key note speakers in the trainings conducted for medical professionals on viral hepatitis and other liver diseases since 2016.

After completing his super-speciality training in Pediatric Hepatology (DM course) from Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, New Delhi, Dr Vikrant Sood joined as faculty in the same department, the only said pediatric hepatology department in the country. He has been working in the pediatric hepatology department since its very inception and the entire team has been instrumental in establishing a fully functional unit which is well equipped for prompt management of infectious, metabolic and hereditary liver diseases in neonates, children and adolescent, including successful running the only public sector pediatric liver transplant program in the country. In his limited career span, he has done and initiated research and published papers in the field of wilson’s disease, pediatric acute liver failure, portal hypertension and other core areas of pediatric hepatology which have been published in national and international journals of repute.

Dr. Sood is one of the key note speakers and is undertaking regular trainings for all levels of healthcare workers on pediatric viral hepatitis.

Dr. Vinod Arora has completed his MBBS from UCMS and GTB Hospital, University of Delhi, and MD Medicine from LHMC and SSKH, University of Delhi, Delhi in 2013. He did his DM in Hepatology from Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, New Delhi in 2017 and has joined as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hepatology after completion of his DM.

Dr. Vinod also did a short-term observer ship at Hospital Clinic, Barcelona, Spain. He has gained experience in transplant hepatology, critical care medicine and endoscopic procedures. His area of interest includes, Portal hypertension, ACLF and Viral Hepatitis.

Dr. Vinod is undertaking sessions on hepatology related topics for all levels of healthcare workers under project PRAKASH & ECHO since 2018. He has also supported team in developing scientific content for questionnaires required in medical professionals training program.

Dr. Reshu Agarwal is currently working as Associate Professor at ILBS, New Delhi. She has been graduated from Sarojini Naidu Medical College, Agra and MD Microbiology from AIIMS, New Delhi. She had completed her senior residency from AIIMS and also worked as Senior Research Associate under CSIR at AIIMS.  Her major areas of interest include clinical virology, post-transplant viral infections, molecular virology.

She has been instrumental in planning and execution of viral hepatitis diagnostic support program for laboratory professionals on viral hepatitis & COVID-19 under project PRAKASH. She is also taking regular lectures for all levels of healthcare workers and has successfully trained over 10,000 healthcare workers under the projects.

Dr. Ashish has completed his PDCC in transfusion medicine from ILBS, in 2015. He has completed hid MBBS from RNT Medical college, Udaipur and MD from PGI Chandigarh. At present he is working as faculty in department of transfusion medicine at ILBS.

Dr. Ashish has teaching experience of more than 8 years and in regularly involved in many training programs of NACO, ECHO & PRAKASH at national level as a resource faculty. He has been awarded the Young Investigator Award at ISBT, Dubai 2016 for his research work on Guillain Barre Syndrome patients with TPE. He is member of the International society of blood transfusion and life time member of the Indian society of transfusion Medicine. He has played an instrumental role in establishing Plasma Bank in ILBS which was first of its kind in the country.

Dr. Ashish is one of the key resource speakers under project PRAKASH and is delivering talks on bio-medical waste management. He is supporting team in developing IEC material on viral hepatitis and infection prevention for display in hospitals across India.
